BCP COUNCIL UPDATE


This will be our last article in the Residents’ newsletter before the local elections on May 4th.
 
Photographic Identification for Voting
Please remember that when you go to vote, you now have to take some photographic identification with you.  This can be a driving licence, passport or a bus pass.  For those without any photographic identification, you can apply to BCP for a Voter Authority Certificate   https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate
Postal voters are not affected.
New Look Polling Card
Polling Cards will now arrive as A4 size, in an envelope.  They are a prescribed document under the Elections Act 2022, so it isn’t the choice of BCP Council. They have to produce them like this because of the additional information that they now carry.
 
New Leader at BCP Council
You may know that the previous Leader of the Council, Drew Mellor, resigned in early February amid a furore about the budget which was coming to Council on 21st February.  At that Full Council meeting Cllr. Philip Broadhead, previously Deputy Leader, was elected unopposed to lead the Council until the forthcoming elections.
 
Council Tax
Also, at that February Council meeting the budget and Council Tax for 2023/24 was set.  The Council Tax increase will be 4.99%, being 2.99% basic BCP rise, and 2% for Adult Social Care.
 
Queensmead, Bronte Avenue – Planning Application for Change of Use from C2 (residential care home) to Sui Generis for 20 bed temporary hostel.  Time limited for a period of up to 5 years.

We have been receiving many e mails asking what will be happening at the Queensmead Care Home in Bronte Avenue.  The property currently has planning permission for use as a Care Home.  Due to a roof leak some time ago, residents were moved out for repairs to be done.  Since then, the Lessee, Care South, has decided to give up their Lease so the building reverts back to BCP Council.  They tell us that they would like to use it for extra care housing in the long term so that people can live independently rather than going into the care system.  However, BCP say that a lot of work needs to be done to achieve that, and in the mean time they have put in a temporary change of use planning application for the building to be used by those currently in a homeless situation.  This will apparently be a mix of adult families, couples and individuals.  It will involve converting the interior into 1 and 2 bedroom flats with a community area as well.  The plan is for the building to be staffed 24/7, daytime by BCP staff and night time by contractors.  A  planning application was submitted but it had little detail and has led to a lot of speculation.  BCP has now added a Management Plan to the planning portal.  You can see it here.  You can give your comments on the proposals through the consultation process which runs to 8th April.   Many residents have already been in touch with us expressing their concerns.  We have already ensured that the application will come before a planning committee rather than being decided by officers under delegated powers.  However, this will not be for several months.
 
Land on Corner of The Grove/Barrack Road
Last month we wrote in the newsletter informing you about this outline application for access for 2 Drive Through Restaurants – Application Number 8/23/0074/OUT.  The consultation has now closed.  However, the planning portal shows a huge amount of comments, mainly objections. We have already made sure that this application will come before the Planning Committee and not be decided by Planning Officers.  There is no date yet set for when the application will be heard.

"Ukes For U"                        

 

Christchurch U3A's very own Ukulele group, "Ukes For U", will be appearing at the New Forest Ukulele Festival in May. This day-long festival in New Milton features appearances of many of the top Ukulele Groups across the region. This celebration of the magic of the Ukulele is an annual event drawing an audience from far and wide. We will have a 25 minute slot to perform five much loved songs which this year will feature our version of the universal favourite "Bring Me Sunshine" the song a certain comedy duo, "Morecambe and Wise", sang and danced to at the end of each of their shows. We will be singing and we will be playing, but we will definitely not be dancing. 

 

Since the early days of "Ukes For U" we have sought out opportunities to play in public and this has helped us hone our playing and most of our singing. It has helped make us into the confident and tuneful unit that we have become. We meet weekly on a Tuesday afternoon and currently have a membership of 30 players. At the moment we are not accepting new members but this will change before the Autumn term when we will be accepting beginners again. 

 

As a group our aim has been primarily to have fun playing the Ukulele and entertaining others without embarrassing our audience or ourselves. So if you have never picked up a musical instrument before but wish to have a go do make a date in your diary to contact us in September and discuss joining us. 

 

Meanwhile, do come to the Festival on Saturday 13th May. It is at the New Milton Memorial Centre, Whitefield Road, New Milton, BH25 6DE. Doors open at 10am and the first performance is at 11am.  Do make yourself known to us. 

 

A great time will be had by all.  You will not be disappointed.

Airport Ambassadors
 
Bournemouth Airport will shortly be launching a search for “Volunteer Ambassadors”, who will work as part of a friendly and dedicated team, providing a meet and greet and information service to passengers. They will be first based landside but eventually airside through Security.

Routes / Airlines

There are three key airlines: TUI; Ryanair; and easyJet. There are seven tour operators working with the Airport, namely Hays Travel, Hurtigruten, Newmarket Holidays, P&O Cruises, Santa’s Lapland, Transun and TUI. The Airport flew to thirty-five destinations in seventeen countries. New destinations for 2023 were Carcassonne, Edinburgh & Venice (all Ryanair). There would be a second based Ryanair aircraft at Bournemouth from May, with 11 additional flights per week.

St Catherine's Hill Community Hall

 

 

3rd Christchurch Brownies

 

We have now moved into the Hall on the Hill and held 3 meetings.  We are having a lot of fun and this week welcomed 5 new brownies as they made their promise in our new venue.   We had to remember to say “Serve the King” – for some of us that is quite challenge as we are so used to saying “Queen”. 
We made guiding lights -  fairy cakes decorated with butter cream icing and a strawberry pencil cut to look like a candle sang “This little guiding light of mine,  shook a friends hand,  before  taking a journey on our magic carpet at the end of the evening. 
 
We have also spent a day at Foxlease the Girlguiding  Training centre where the girls had the opportunity to practice their archery skills and then chance their arm at the crate challenge, testing out their balancing skills before swinging in the trees like monkeys!.   Everyone had a fantastic time and can’t wait till we go back again in the summer.

Our membership has fallen since Covid prevented us from our preferred face to face collection of subscriptions so we would like to remind everyone how to subscribe. 

Our membership year runs from April to March, any payments made since January will be allocated to 23/24 .
The membership fee remains at one pound per household.
